Magnetoresistive Random-access Memory (MRAM) can be compared to the way hard drives
operate. It relies on magnetic properties unlike many of the current memory options that use
electric charges to access and store data. Some experts believe the development of MRAM is
one of the most significant discoveries of the last 10 years. When mass production starts these
chips should be integrated in mobile phones, computers and other electronical systems that
require fast and reliable memory solutions. Several large corporations like IBM, and Motorola
have been very interested in this new technology. They are actively developing MRAM chips.
Freescale has been building MRAM units for a while now and are producing enough for retail
sales starting this year. One fascinating feature of MRAM would be the storage of a complete
operating system, causing fast boot up times. This would also be great for servers. It was
announced on 10 July that the first chips would be shipped to stores, and will be trying to
grab a piece of the almost 50 billion USD memory market. Prices will not be much different
from Flash memory - aimed at mass production and high sales.
MRAM is faster as SRAM and as dense as DRAM, it has no know heat issues similar to the those
two - making it even more interesting for mission critical processing tasks. Can you imagine
in the near future pressing your PC's "on" button and having the OS load pretty much instantly?
This is one of the expected features that most consumers are looking forward to. Today boot up
times can take quite long, and can cause annoyances if you have to reboot a lot.
Magnetoresistive Random-access Memory technology has been around since the 1970's, but
has never been able to come in small sized, small enough for mass production. That is history
and we can now look forward to using these highly effective chips in our hardware soon.
